The theoretical concepts were subjected to empirical verification. 18 individual in-depth interviews were conducted. The respondents were: active chess players,parents of competitive chess players, chess instructors, chess enthusiasts,e-sports and computer games fans, and people who were not interested in chess or e-sports.}, abstract={The study also included the observation of the training process and chess tournaments of players representing chess clubs Jagiellonia Białystok and MUKS Stoczek 45 Białystok. The findings confirmed that there was no uniform definition of chess. Chess was considered as something more than a game and pastime by the respondents. At the same time,a number of respondents refused to call chess a sport because of its lack of physical activity.
