 abstract={The author shows the practical aspects of the idea of "the third place", based on experience of a modern academic library - the Library of the Pedagogical and Artistic Department of the Poznań Adam Mickiewicz University in Kalisz. It is not only the space for the library stock, but it is a place for people. It is not onlya lending and reading room, but also a place for learning. It is the centre of the university's intellectual life, and an area which is convenient for exchanging ideas,team work and relax.The article mentions some factors and reasons why the Department Library is attractive: interior design, equipment, furniture, good localization in the environment, and the fact that it is a non-commercial and not expensive meeting venue.It is attractive not only for the students and academic teachers but also for people who are not associated with the university, for example kindergarteners, schoolpupils and senior citizens. Among them there are the students of the municipal "Third Age University" in Gołuchów and senior citizens who participate in the project of "Digital Poland of Equal Chances" aimed at introducing people older than 50 years old into the digital world.The author gives examples that the academic library can be a place for relax,casual meetings, and also a place strengthening the social ties and the feeling of belonging to a community.},
