 abstract={The article examines the research potential of documents, with particular emphasis on museum archival holdings and writers` private collections. Using the documentary legacy of Eberhard Hilscher as an example, it becomes evident that cultural memory, as shaped by the state`s politics of memory, does not affect private archives to the same extent. These archives, independent of political and historical changes in the system, contain source materials that are important for understanding the author`s views and the historical period in which they lived.},
