The metaphorical term "feel emotions" can thus be taken literally. The sense of smell plays a significant role in our lives, and in literature because it influences our psychophysical activity. Our ability to smell and feel emotions has its source in the same part of the brain where both memories and feelings are stored. This is because the olfactory brain is part of the brain?s limbic system which is responsible for emotions and memory. The extraordinary power of the smell evokes memories from the distant past which are much more durable than the impressions caused by visual stimuli.}, abstract={In this article, I show how Italian literature, illustrates the relationship between smell and the activity of the human psyche. Thanks to such literature, the reader can be happy, moved, or fearful, despaired or indignant, that is, experience reactions similar tool factory ones when we smell. Therefore, I show that in literature smell evokes similar emotions. Since smelling is a subconscious experience, its presence in a work of literature affects, as can be predicted, one`s state of psyche, including cognitive functions, creativity and memory. The therapeutic effect of literature, like that of the sense of smell, can be seen in the fact that it is a work of art and an object of aesthetic experience.}, abstract={The world of literature, with its smell enables many therapeutic experiences influencing our wellbeing because it opens up opportunities for heroes and us, readers, creating a possibility to stop here and now, improving mental wellbeing by recalling pleasant memories. It also influences conscious breathing (sniffing), influences mindfulness, promotes contemplation, and stimulates creativity. Finally, it helps us define our own ways of being, that is, becoming aware of our most intimate desires and values.
