Abstract:The aim of the study was to answer the question of the social functions of the traditions of the former German inhabitants of Żary/Sorau, whose heritage is also inherited by the prezent-day residents of the town. This aim was pursued by outlining the history of the former inhabitants of Żary, the transformations of their memory of the lost homeland, and the forms through which their identity was consolidated, with particular emphasis on the role of shooting traditions. ; The study examined memoir materiale published in the periodical addressed to the dispersed population of Sorau and Lower Lusatia, "Sorauer Heimatblatt. Das Heimatblatt fur Stadt und Land', as well as memorabilia of the shooting brotherhood donated to the museum in Żary. These cultural texts were analysed using contemporary theories of memory, especially those of Jan and Aleida Assmann and Pierre Nora. ; The research showed that the passage of time, demographic changes, and socio-political factors influenced the evolution of memory: from longing for one`s native land, through cultural memory associated with an ideology of loss and the need to return to the homeland, to the perception of the heritage of lost places as part of a process of participation in cultural inheritance.
