Abstract:

The sudden arrests of the French Templars in October 1307 was a great surprise both to the most important participants of the political life of Western Europe and to the members of the order, which had played an important role on the courts of particular countries of this part of the continent and the papal curia for over two hundred years. ; Since the actions against their community did not start at the same time in the whole of Christian world, the Templars that weren't staying in France had had the time to prepare for the expected attack. That was what happened in the case of the Aragon members of the "Templum". ; The actions that they undertook during the first months after the proceedings against the order had started depended mostly on the information concerning the development of the situation in France that had come to them from various sources. ; The analysis of the letters which came in at that time to the Aragon Templars shows both some interesting aspects of the crisis of the community and allows to trace the mechanisms of information and rumor transfer between the neighboring communities of the Western Europe at the beginning of the 14th century.
