Presented essey is a starting-point for more comprehensive cycle of studies on the structure and function of school-book in teaching of literature. The main aim was the maintenance of evolutional course of literature school-books by the presentation, among other things, teaching achievement in this field, as the real value of school-book is being revealed only from retrospective view. Therefore it is so important in order to expressing the directions at the authors of school-books not to reveal the truth, which is well-known, but refer to it creatively. ; This article is therefore the attempt of presenting the main tendendes of the development of school-books for teaching of Polish literature, approved by authorities at the secondary schools of Galicia and the Congress Kingdom of Poland in years 1867-1918. Basing on newspaper statements, teaching plans, official records and reviews, the course of dise:ussion on the purposes and the methods of literature teaching at contemporary secondary schools has been presented ; Reflections on the structure and the functions of school-book constructed from the most representative statements have been also shown. When the contents and the character of methodical solutions in school-books for pupils of secondary schools of lower and higher level and in historical and literary compends were analysed. The author has reached the sources inspiring new teaching solutions, which should be used in the studies on modernization and achievement of the highest level of school-books of literature, carried out at the present moment.
