Abstract_pl:

Abstract:

The paper undertakes the study of Eugene Sue`s famous serialized novel in the context of the historyof the Legend of the Wandering Jew. The Legend itself, of a medieval origin, was very popular withRomantic writers in several western European countries, especially in Britain, France and Germany.Contrary to what one might expect, Eugene Sue`s title character plays a relatively minor role inthe story. ; The paper discusses the way the French novelist portrays the legendary character: his appearance, the Mark that symbolises his guilt, his character and actions. While remaining true to the stereotypical or received ideas on the Wanderer, Sue, nevertheless, introduces or popularizes several interesting traits, notably the presence of a female companion (the Wandering Jewess) and the motif of the Wandering Jew`s redemption and death. ; The novel, although a commercial success, is far from being a masterpiece; arguably, the best treatments of the Legend of the Wandering Jew in literature are those which focus on his position or role as a Chronicler of the World, such as the late-twentieth century "History of the Wandering Jew" by Jean d`Ormesson.
