 abstract={The reflections included in the article concern the functioning of virtual communities and emerging online relationships between their members. The analyses were performer on the basis of the observation of a group of women - active members of one of the maternity forums. The women knew each other virtually and had been emailing each other (remaining in close, daily contact) for over a year. They had experienced (virtually and in reality) pregnancy, childbirth and infant care. Some of them had known each other since the period before their pregnancy. A social function appeared to be one of the most important functions of being a discussion forum member, along with the informative and advice functions. A special feature of the examined virtual community occurred to be the sense of locality and its specificity.},
