 abstract={The paper describes salutations in the 17th- and 18th-century epistolography. As one of the components of the initial part of a letter, salutation is an equivalent of a greeting in a live conversation. This formulaic expression is a more or less extended vocative form of address.},
 abstract={The selection of its components in the 17th and 18th centuries was mostly determined by social factors, such as the relationship between the sender and the recipient, their social rank and the communication-related roles they assumed. Circumstantial and psychological actors were less important. Salutation had some significant functions in terms of pragmatics (starting the contact, creating the atmosphere of respect), but also in terms of structure, cognitive aspects and the genre.},
 abstract={Various determinants and functions of salutations are presented on the basis of the linguistic material excerpted from the correspondence written in the 17th and 18th centuries by the inhabitants of the South-Eastern Borderland. The analysed letters are addressed to the representatives of the gentry of that time, from various levels of social hierarchy (noble families, officials of various ranks and family members).},
