PB - Zielona Góra: Uniwersytet Zielonogórski, Instytut Filologii Polskiej N2 - In the second half of the 19th century Polish illustrated magazines published - among oth?ers - reproductions of historical paintings. For the editors, the scenes from the Polish history were the most important. Artists created monumental works which fuzed the effect of complex historical processes into one picture, but also searched for anecdotes from the private life of past characters. N2 - Sigismund II Augustus and Barbara Radziwiłł, Saint Casimir Jagiellon or Jadwiga of Poland were the figures who were portrayed most often by Polish painters and, consequently, popularized by il?lustrated press. N2 - The magazines were published in Warsaw, but they had subscribers in every part of the former country of Poland. This enabled the readers who lived outside big cities to have contact with the art. It was a way to create a historical narrative that would be shared by every member of educated social classes.
