PB - Vilnius: Mykolas Romeris Universitetas N2 - On a global scale, the last decade of the 20th century has been characterized by distinct social changes and the perception of disability in peoples' lives has admittedly been part of them. Disabled people create the largest minority in the world. The affected do not voluntarily select or choose the health handicap. The individual who became disabled, alternatively was born with a disability, has to come to terms with the consequences influencing his life, and not everyone can manage that on their own. N2 - Taking care of the disabled persons in our society assumes a multidisciplinary approach. Nursing has an important place within all disciplines related to the care of the disabled and nurses play an important role within the relevant experts. The mission of the nurse in the society is to help persons, families, and communities to meet their current needs, with the aim to achieve the utmost physical, mental, and social conditions in accordance with the environment in which they live. N2 - To be the least possibly limited by a health handicap in everyday activities, since early childhood, the disabled adult must live in a supporting and motivating environment, not a delimiting one. Parents and closest social surroundings of the disabled participate significantly in this process. The degree of disability that limits the individual in his everyday activities only partially depends on the medical diagnosis, moreover on the disability perception of the society.
