TY - GEN A1 - Strzyżewski, Wojciech (1960- ) A2 - Skobelski, Robert (1968- ) - red. PB - Zielona Góra: Oficyna Wydawnicza Uniwersytetu Zielonogórskiego N2 - Located on the western border of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Skwierzyna for centuries had the status of a royal city. External symbols of the cities` royal status were images of crowns placed on shields of their coats of arms. This very phenomenon was particularly noticeable in the 17th century after the Polish-Swedish war that had ended in 1660. N2 - As regards Skwierzyna, the crown was located on the shield of its coat of arms in 1660, as was the case with other Polish cities` coats of arms. Placed above the coat of arms, the royal crown symbolized the monarch`s protection of the city. N2 - In light of preserved sigillographic and heraldic sources, it can be asserted that the royal crown located on the shield of a coat of arms was common not only to big cities but also to the smallest ones, which is evidenced by the seals of the cities of Babimost, Opoczno, Ropczyce and others, including Skwierzyna.
