Described area is located in western Poland (lubuskie province) and characterized by a plain relief (relative height differences aprox. 12 m), diversity of bed rock (sands of various origins, clays), a relatively large variability of weather conditions, especially the annual rainfall (484-746 mm in 2005-2011), the presence of underground aquifers and many forms of surface waters and diversity of soil cover. The dominant form of land use is forest and arable land. Municipalities are rich in wildlife protected areas. This rule was retained in the construction of the railway line and station in the 2nd half of the XIXth century ? this line was built approx. 1 km north of City Hall and approx. 600 m from the boundaries of urban built-up area. Near the railway station a large industrial plants, depots and service plants were built. N2 - During the development of this sector, it has been supplemented by residential development, services and green areas. Today, building has largely chaotic lay-out as a result of the mixing of different visions of urban planning. In a consequence of the significant growth of the city, both railroad and roads for wheeled vehicles have been running through its center. The solutions with the various concentrations of abovementioned salts have been tested on seeds of the following plants: rye (Secale cereale L.), common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), rape (Brassica napus oleifera L.) and white mustard (Sinapis alba L.). N2 - The pot experiment was carried out in laboratory conditions. Each variant of the experiment has been made in three replications. After the 7 days of germination, number of the germinated seeds was counted. There was no significant variation of the impact of the solutions tested on seeds used in the experiment. The influence of CuSO4 was the highest on seed germination in all the plants except rye. Higher concentrations of the salts caused reduced germination of most from the tested plants. The significant impact on the environment can be noted in areas adjacent to the metal industry plants, in a consequence of pollutants emission, especially dusts containing the heavy metals, into the atmosphere. In the surroundings of Głogów Copper Smelter (GCS) elevated amounts of copper and lead has been noted. N2 - In the soils of the test sites were found up to 5250 mg kg-1Cu and 1290 mg kg-1Pb.
