Abstract:
The article contains two parts. The first shows the way of scientific evolution of the author of Literary History. From his biography we know, that Mr. Chrzanowski after finishing his University studies worked as a scholar at Wroclaw under the guidance of Prof. Władysław Nehring and afterwards attended lectures by famous scientists in Berlin, as Mr. Alexander Brückner and Mr. Wilhelm Dilthey. Since 1894 Mr. Chrzanowski taught at private schools in Warsaw lecturing History of Polish Literature. It was a time of very intensive researches and till 1906, when he presented his text-book, he had puhlished more than 200 different reviews, articles and papers. The second part treats of the most important methodical principles of Construction of Literary History of Independent Poland ; The author among others gives evidence, that Mr. Chrzanowski examined the history of literature under the aspect of patriotic service for his country and that he treated belletristic literature as the most important way of moral and civic education of the People. Beyond that Mr. Chrzanowski applied to his researches a high degree of objectvism, showed autogenous knowledge, drew outstanding psychological portraits of writers, accomplished esthetical appraisals of the works and ethical appraisements of the writers, made use of accurate and scholary comparisons in the reviews and the author's activities, wrote in a highly educated style with an admixture of phraseology taken from colloquial language and in many a case showed his emotional engagement to thediscussed problems. The researcher's scientific knowledge and his rich array of methodical principles completed a work, which since 1906 till to-day enjoys an unflagging popularity.
