Abstract:
In the article, the authors explore the main issues raised in the Western studies of E. Sue`s TheMysteries of Paris. They outline the origins of the book, which has contributed to the popularizationof the serial novels andt hey present the characteristics of this type of literature. Thanks to thedetailed descriptions of Paris, the novel has become one of the most famous nineteenth-centuryportraits of this most fascinating city in Europe. ; The article presents also different interpretationsof this book. The main character, Rudolf, is interpreted as the mythical Orpheus, who goes into thestreets of Paris to find a lost daughter. Eugene Sue resembles his hero, physically and spiritually,because for this author writing The Mysteries of Paris was the time of the ideological breakthrough:he started to write it as an impoverished dandy, but he finished his novel hailed as the protectorand friend of the people of Paris.
