Abstract:
The article discusses the use of methodological strategy inspired by multiplace ethnography (Marcus 1995) in the research on migration of the Lithuanian minority from the borderland of Suwalki to the centres of the mother country and the state of permanent residence. The first part of the article sums the prevailing trends in the research on national minorities in Poland including the Lithuanian minority. ; I propose the following thesis; nowadays, as one of the most important phenomena in this group is the increasing level of mobility of the young generation, which undermines the shaped throughout decades key element of identity which is the attachment to the land, there is a need to change the way the research is being carried out. I suggest a strategy which modifies the traditional, anthropologist field method based on long term stay of the researcher in one community in order to examine a particular issue in many spaces and in different time points. ; I present my research carried out for almost three years in Poland and Lithuania. They include both students and graduates - those who having completed universities settled in big cities in Poland and Lithuania as well as those who came back to their native communities, and also - those left in the borderland representatives of minority - ethnic leaders and "ordinary inhabitants". In the second part of the text I present identified by me differences in the course of the research among the representatives of the same group resulting from their location as well as their significance for the obtained material. The final part is an afterthought over the advantages and threats arising from the accepted approach.
