The article concerns social competencies of the youth. The first part deals with the way the competencies of young people are present in the theory of sociology, in particular how defining the competencies is connected with the dominant contexts in given periods. The author presents different sets of key social competencies related to socialization in a group, nonconformity, adjustment to the late-capitalist market and functioning in a state of uncertainty and risk. ; Against the background of the discussion on competencies conducted within the framework of the social sciences, the paper demonstrates the definitions of key competencies present in EU strategic documents concerning education, lifelong learning and youth policy. Moreover, it shows a selected example of the influence on building competence in young people - European programme "Youth in Action". ; As it results from the evaluation studies, the participation in the projects financed by the programme is particularly conducive to the development of competencies related to communication and functioning within a group. It may be noted that the declared increase in skills and competencies is slightly higher among Polish participants compared to European average. The data also shows that acquiring competencies and skills is associated with active participation in the preparation and implementation of the project as well as with informal relationships among the participants.
