Abstract:
Religious efforts in quest after the unique, superior Idea of the "Unrepresentable God! InexpressibleIdea of many meanings" was an essential, pivotal element in the life and creative activity of ArnoldSchoenberg, who understood his musical and ethical evolution as a mystic journey. In Schoenberg`spaintings, an image of Wandering Jew served as a model for his self-portraits. ; To some extent,Schoenberg was a kind of a Wandering Jew in that he suffered from unfulfilled spiritual strivingsand he continually searched for God. This is also observable in his musical compositions. Therefore,by no means can one help association of the image of Jew inherent in a myth of the Wandering Jew,in this mythical generalization of not only the individual fate in view of the nation but also the fateof the whole Jewish nation in view of the universal experience of mankind, which are implied by themyth, i.e. through the myth elucidated.
