When the first reports concerning the protests and strikes caused by the price increase emergedat the beginning of July 1980, the West-German journalists immediately recalled the protestswhich sparked off in Poland in 1970 and 1976. While anticipating further complications ofpolitical and economic situation, the development of the circumstances and the necessity ofeconomical reforms were being debated. ; The strike in Gdańsk triggered a real outburst of reports.Since the second half of August 1980, Poland hits the front pages of all the daily papers inthe Federal Republic of Germany. The reasons of the crisis were discussed, as was its specificcharacter, distinct from the crises of 1970 and 1976. On August 20 1980 West-German papersannounced that the workers of Gdańsk had hung the Polish national red-and-white flags andhad put on red-and-white armbands. The workers' protest had changed its character. ; It hadbecome political in nature. From the second half of August 1980, foreign observers held theview chat Poland had entcred a new political path. No body believed anymore chat the situation might return to the state from before August. At the end of the month, the public opinions in Poland, Germany, Europe and even in the whole world were convinced of the seriousness of the situation on the Polish coast.
