Abstract:
The incapacitation of the Polish people's movement by the communist party meant that the United People's Party (abbreviated ZSL, from the Polish term "Zjednoczone StronnictwoLudowe"), which was established in 1949, had to implement its program. It stood in contradiction to the peasants' expectations, because the collectivization, promoted by the People 's Party members, deprived them of their economic independence, which they held in high esteem. ; The ZSL's participation in this and many other actions inspired by the Polish United Workers'Party (PUWP), as well as the purges performed in Żary county district of ZSL had led to the decrease of its members' number, particularly between 1949 and 1955. In consequence of the transformations of October 1956, the People's Party rejected the dictate of PUWP and the number o f ZSL's members in Żary county increased from 490 in 1955 to 658 in 1957. Theincrease was, however, nor as visible as in other counties, e.g. in Żagań county, because the farmers were reluctant to join ZSL ranks after their previous experiences with the party.
