This article analyzes "A Gentle Creature" - a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky - as a film adaptationdirected by Mariusz Treliński, taking up the issue of intersemiotic translation. It also explores relationsbetween literature and film, such as narrative matters, time, space, the character concept and theways to express literary reality using cinematic methods. It brings up the social and cultural contextsin both mediums as well. ; In the film by Treliński, the main character-narrator`s dramatic monologue, full of tension, often serves as a substitute for silence, meanwhile showing the impossibility of communication. The characters` desperate solitude, their incapability to express love (no matter how much they yearn for understanding and closeness) gains not only psychological depth in the film but is also presented with the help of metaphorical devices (a puppet theatre, a trembling chandelier or a broken dish). The protagonist`s confession, which includes violent accusations of the female character, is turned into a calm, contemplative story dominated by the atmosphere of sorrow and resignation, but also by the forgiveness and compassion for the two miserable people.
