The author of the article claims that film adaptations of literary works indicate not only the directors`personal interpretations of the literary sources but also reflect, in their social and political aspects, the place and time in which the adaptation has been prepared. The assumption is verified by ananalysis of three adaptations of the classical tragedy "Oedipus the King" by Sophocles: P.P. Pasolini`s filmand two television plays - one directed by Laco Adamik (1992) and the other by Gustaw Holoubek(2005). ; In support of her arguments, the author indicates analogies between the narrative situation of the drama and the situation of the handover of political power in Poland in 1989. What is also discussed is the question of how the semantic and emotional emphases spread over the story affect the artistic statement on the judgment of crimes and offenses committed in the People`s Republic of Poland, which was part of a very important dispute present in the public sphere in the, so called, "Third Republic of Poland".
