Wiersze angielskich poetów metafizycznych XVII stulecia - Johna Donne`a, George`a Herberta, Thomasa Traherne`a i innych - zostały upowszechnione kręgu anglojęzycznym w dużej mierze za sprawą T.S. Eliota. Przekrojowe tłumaczenia tej poezji na język polski zaczęły być publikowane dopiero w drugiej poło?wie XX w. Autorami najistotniejszych tłumaczeń są m.in. Jerzy Pietrkiewicz, Jerzy S. Sito i Stanisław Barańczak. ; Celem niniejszej pracy jest określenie problemów związanych z tym, w jaki sposób recepcja poetów metafizycznych w Polsce jest warunkowana przez wybory tłumaczy, dokonywane w akcie prze?kładu. Okazuje się bowiem, że nie tylko czytelnicy poezji, ale też badacze i literaturoznawcy opierają się w pewnej mierze na kształcie przekładu. W tym zakresie przekłady jednego tylko tłumacza - Barańczaka - zdają się mieć status kanoniczny. ; Innym istotnym zagadnieniem jest niejednorodność grupy poetów metafizycznych, stanowiąca wyzwanie dla tłumacza, który chce oddać indywidualny styl każdego z nich. Poezja metafizyczna daje też okazję do prześledzenia sporów o strategie tłumaczenia poezji dawnej.
Abstract:
The metaphysical poetry of the 17th century has become widespread in the English-speaking world mostly due to the influence of T.S. Eliot. However, the cross-section translations of this poetry into Polish began to be published in the second half of the 20th century. Among the authors of the most importatnt translations are Jerzy Pietrkiewicz, Jerzy S. Sito and Stanisław Barańczak. ; The purpose of this paper is to characterise the problems connected with the fact that the reception of the metaphysical poets in Poland is determined by the translators` choices.Not only readers, but literary scholars also rely their perception - to some extent - on translations. In this regard, translations by only one author - Barańczak - seem to have canonical status. ; Another important issue is the diversity of the metaphysical poets, constituting a challenge for the translator, who wants to maintain individual style of each member of this group. Moreover, metaphysical poetry creates an opportunity of discussion about the strategies of translating old poetry.
