The novels by Joseph Dzierzkowski belong to literary achievements that have been, to a large extent, nowadays forgotten. Analysing the pattern of the novel by E. Sue, "The Mysteries of Paris", detectablein the Polish author`s works, the author of this article addresses three novels: "The Jugglers, Fora dowry" and "The drawing room and the street". These connections to a "mystery novel" are visible in the way the municipal space is utilized. In Dzierzkowski`s novels, the city of Lvov, contrary to thefunction of a city in the works by the French author, does not play the role of a rightful character. ; However, creating expressive figures out of the criminal world, the Polish writer used the poeticsof the species in the most creative way ("Jugglers"). The lack of a true criminal, and simultaneouslyof a main antagonist, the "black character", is an essential shortcoming of Dzierzkowski`s novel. Itis noticeable that the narrator-author develops his story about the existence of some higher justice, but it is difficult to regard it as a replacement formula of "the mechanism of reassurance". ; Therefore, despite the presence of the elements of a "mystery novel" and the traces of the romantic frenetic poetics in the works by Dzierzkowski, we have to the deal, first of all, with the model of the social novel here. Estimating the relationships between "Lounge and street" and the works by E. Sue, one can notice Dzierzkowski`s fascination with this form of the popular novel as well as its influence on the reader of those times, in the process of transmission of weighty social ideas. This is the model of the social novel that the later tendentious prose of the period of positivism precedes.
